Lindgren had started writing the book in 1979 and even before the book was finished, she and the director had Olle Hellbom began to consider how the book could be adapted for film. In the spring of 1982, Hellbom had been busy with financing, finding collaborators and a suitable filming location when he suddenly passed away in June 1982.
When the recordings started in the fall of 1983, Tage Danielsson taken over.
