A little history about Vimmerby market and its importance comes here: Vimmerby has had markets on Vimmerby square since the Middle Ages. It is recorded in a charter from 1604 that gives Vimmerby back the city rights that Gustav Vasa withdrew in 1532.
"We can thank King Charles IX for the fact that Vimmerby got its city privileges back. An admirable decision, considering that Kalmar had been plundered in 1599, and three years later was hit by the plague that killed half of Kalmar's inhabitants. But Charles IX realized the importance of letting Vimmerby be a city with privileges again. That the market was important to the city is understood as it is the first point that Charles IX addresses in the letter of privilege dated 1604:
"First, they should have three markets, two in winter and one in summer. Then the first market should stand at the time of the Hinders Fair, then the second market, St. Mathie's Day in Lent. Then the third eight days before Midsummer's Day, while they still have it; the same market may be visited by all the citizens of the inland cities with their wares, and the same market should stand every two days."
Vimmerby market is also described in Astrid Lindgren's books about Emil in Lönneberga. ""Every year on the last Wednesday in October there was a market in Vimmerby, and then there was life and bustle in that town from early morning until late evening, I can assure you. Every single person from Lönneberga and other parishes went there to sell oxen and buy steers and trade horses and meet people and get a fiancé and eat candy canes and dance schottis and get into fights and have fun, each in their own way.
Emil's mother once asked Lina if she could list the big holidays of the year, because she wanted to see how clever Lina really was, and then Lina said:
"Yes, it's supposed to be Christmas and Easter and the Vimmerby land, I think!" From Nya hyss by Emil i Lönneberga, Illustration by Björn Berg
